Abstract: In the last 150 years the Hungarian Geography Society, founded in 1872, has always been functioning according to its original objectives. These objectives were already laid down by its statutes: “The goal of the Hungarian Geography Society: inducing the interest towards the field of geography by spreading geographical knowledge, and the promotion of research of the geographical conditions of our mother country.” Working towards the original objectives, different areas got prioritized. In the first 25 years the presentation of geographical discoveries was put into the centre. By the turn of the century, the execution and coordination of geographical research gained on emphasis. Since War I, one of the most important activities of the Society has been supporting the role of the geography subject in the public education. From the 1920s, the specialization of the Society resulted in an establishment of disciplinary sections and regional departments. The regional roving conferences – especially in the 50s and 70s – played an outstanding role in the publicity of geography. To solve the problems of the academic societies (the declining role, decreasing opportunities, and decrease of headcount) the founding and supporting of the Civil Organizations of Earth Sciences could serve.

Abstract: The desire of recognition of the great geographical discoveries led to the publication of large world atlases and to the establishment of the first geographical societies. The work of Ortelius, the first modern world atlas reflecting the actual political situation was published in 1570, and the world’s first international geographic congress was convened in Antwerp for marking the 300th anniversary of this atlas. The Hungarian participants of the congress were János Hunfalvy and Ágoston Tóth. Hunfalvy was the head of the first Hungarian geography department and Tóth was a cartographer. Having returned to Hungary they presented the recommendation of Congress for the establishment of national geographical societies. Under the direction of János Hunfalvy, the Hungarian Geographical Society was established on January 12, 1872 in the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Abstract: In the different periods of its 150-year-long history the Hungarian Geographical Society faced different kinds of challenges: at the beginning the organization and financing of geographical expeditions, launching research projects and popular science book series, while in more recent times the dissemination of geographical knowledge acquired prominence. The contacts with public education (and secondary school teachers) have been of variable intensity but the Society has ever been active in strengthening the position of geography as a school subject. The jubilee year is a good opportunity for the revitalization of social life within the Society and establishing new links with the earth sciences at home and abroad. All these efforts are also meant to strengthen the positions of geography in academic and public life.

Abstract: The geography textbooks are always imprints of the educational situation and the social and steering expectations of an actual era, in addition, prove the pedagogical approach as well as the social state of the disciplines represented by the subject. Concerning their judgement from point of view of content and methodology, there will never be consensus because beyond the methodological culture it is determined by the tighter environment, in which the pedagogical work takes place. The first part of the paper provides a survey on the milestones of the development of the Hungarian geography textbooks from the beginning until the present, which enables to see the way leading the recent situation. The second part treats a research accomplished in teachers’ circles, which provides opportunity for a glance into the habits by using the textbooks and into the expectations towards these textbooks.
