1985-ben Joseph Beuys, Enzo Cucchi, Anselm Kiefer és Jannis Kounellis a svájci muvészettörténész, Jean-Christophe Ammann meghívására néhány napot Bázelben töltött. A művészetrol beszélgettek; a művészet újraértékelendő helyérol és szerepéről, a századvég sajátos szellemi és társadalmi struktúrájáról. A második napon Kounellis arról beszélt, hogy meg kellene teremteni a 20. századi Európa intellektuális szintézisét, amint a középkor is megalkotta az akkori világét a katedrálisokkal, a szétesettséggel szemben újra kellene szerkeszteni a rendezőelvet. A beszélgetés vége felé Kounellis metaforáját Beuys ismételte meg, de már felszólító módban: "építsünk katedrálist!", mondta.

In 1985, having been invited by art historian Jean-Christophe Ammann, four people, Joseph Beuys, Enzo Cucchi, Anselm Kiefer and Jannis Kounellis spent a few days in Basel talking about art. They discussed art's new place which, in their opinion, needed some re-evaluating; they talked about this new, specific, turn-of-the-century structure of society and intellectual life. On the second day, Kounellis stressed that is was about time an intellectual synthesis of twentieth-century Europe was created, in a somewhat similar fashion to the cathedrals of the Middle Ages, which had come to be a synthesis for the then known spiritual world, also suggesting that a new organizing principle should be constructed to stop what he called the process of atomisation. Towards the end of the conversation the metaphor developed by Kounellis was repeated by Beuys, this time in the imperative. 'Let us build a cathedral', he suggested.

Our aim in launching this periodical is to show this enterprise, the process of the construction of this end-of-the-millennium cathedral, to record this attempt at synthesis. We are trying our best to see, and help readers see, the visible. At the same time, we'd like to be part of and visually represent all of the art that lends itself to this endeavour. (1993)
