Jahrhundert erschienenen Beiträge (1883 János Cso ntos i, 1895 János Karácso nyi, 1909 I. Adolf Zsák, 1985 András Vizkelety) gedacht.

Pelbartus of Temesvár’s knowledge of astronomy

Very little is known about the state of astronomical knowledge in medieval Hungary. This lack may be remedied by the study of texts written for other purposes, for example sermons. So continuing the work started with Sermones Compilati, I now studied the writings of the franciscan friar Pelbartus of Temesvár. Pelbartus, who lived and worked in the second half of the 15th century, the time of King Matthias mostly, was a student of the University of Cracow. Here he studied contemporary astronomy and astrology, too, and seems to have been well versed in both subjects. It is confirmed by a perusal of his works: we can find astronomical allusions in his sermons, and his theological encyclopedia (Rosarium) contains astronomical sections, like ’Celum’ (Heavens) or ’Zodiacus’ (Zodiac). He followed the general medieval worldview: the Earth is at the centre of the world, and there are several concentric orbs around it, one to each element and, starting with the Moon, one for each planet. The supralunary world is made of the fifth element, which differs from the four sublunary ones (earth, water, air and fire). Pelbartus described the movements of the planets, gave their periods and distances – in the latter case he chose to use the harmonic values of Pliny instead of the generally accepted ones of Al-Farghani. He listed several constellations and mentioned also the great circles on the sky (tropics, equator etc.). He considered the Milky Way as an assemblage of little stars, a view ascribed to philosophers generally. The older literature on Pelbartus considered him unanimously as a ’persecutor of astrology’. His books do not confirm this view. While he naturally considered judicial astrology as forbidden for a true Catholic, he accepted natural astrology. In Rosarium we find several examples of his use of e.g. medicinal astrology, like his discussion of the dog days (’dies caniculares’). Pelbartus mentioned a lot of authorities in his texts. Comparison of the originals and several later compilations revealed however, that he probably used only a few encyclopedic works, like Vincent of Beauvais’ Speculum naturale. It was possible to show in a few cases that Pelbartus took over Vincent’s misreadings, proving that it was his direct source. Since Pelbartus was frequently translated into Hungarian, his knowledge of astronomy found its way into codices in the vernacular. He seems to fit well into the age of King Matthias with his knowledge of astronomy and astrology.

A régi román könyvek művészete: a budai Egyetemi Nyomda román nyelvű kiadványainak metszetei (1780–1830)

A tárgyalt korszakban (Bianu-Hodoş-Simonescu román retrospektív bibliográfiája 1830-ig regisztrálja a régi könyveket) 240 román nyelvű könyv készült Budán, és legtöbbjük gazdagon díszített, különösen gyakoriak a címlapelőzék-metszetek. A 240-ből 36 könyvben összesen 90 illusztráció található, közülük 45 vallásos, 45 világi témájú. Külön figyelmet érdemelnek: a hagyományos fametszetű illusztrációk, amelyek elsősorban a szerényebb külsejű vallásos könyvekben találhatók, az igényesebb réz- és acélmetszetek – az illusztrációk túlnyomó részét ezek alkotják – és a technikai újdonságnak számító kőnyomatos technika megjelenése a román nyelvű könyvekben. A kutatások bizonyítják, Budán készült az első, kőrajzzal illusztrált román könyv. A jól felszerelt, nagy példányszámokkal dolgozó Egyetemi Nyomdában megvolt a lehetőség a technikai újdonságok gyors bevezetésére is. A vallásos könyvek díszítése természetesen a bizánci hagyományt követte akkor is, ha a budai Egyetemi Nyomdában készültek, de magukon viselték a nyugati művészet jellemzőit is, így a korszak klasszicista stílusa is nyomot hagyott a jellegzetes fejléceken, záródíszeken. A világi témájú könyvek gyorsabban követték az általános európai stílusirányzatokat, érthetően, hiszen a rajzolók, illetve a metszők is ugyanazok, akik az Egyetemi nyomda egyéb kiadványait is illusztrálták (kivétel a metszők közül a román Constantin Lecca).

Lajos Kelemen’s letter about the matter of RMK of the transilvanian library (1958)

Lajos Kelemen (1877–1963) was an archivist in Cluj-Napoca, with his outstanding historical works and personality, although he wasn’t a professor in any university, he was a teacher for generations, he taught with his own examples and routine. By the implementation of the idea of a museum, the completion of the transilvanian archives, and his professional leading works in the historical writing is represent scholarly value. With his works he was the mentor of ages, and he also contributed to the the results of the high level publication and reception of cultural and art historical research. Was convinced, that the progression of the hungarian science, can only be served unselfishly. The presentation of Lajos Kelemen’s cultural historical works, can’t be complete without his several thousands letters. Beyond these letters literary value, these contain many scholarly data, we can know lots of facts about different periods, former institutions, professionals and naturally the life and works of Lajos Kelemen, in the known and latent parts of these letters. The magnitude of the written discourse, he reported in a letter by himself: „The remaining, close to 70 years, at least 7000, 95% responded letters is enough evidence whereas I had to spend my afternoons and my nights.” What he didn’t write in his articles and studies, it remains the loss of the transilvanian historiography. We can discover this often lamented spiritual treasure in his correspondence. For your awareness we publish the letter of Gábor Incze (1898–1966) reformed pastor, who wrote that to the ecclesiastical historians, with average 16 pages, and it’s about the RMK-substance of the transilvanian libraries. The presentation of the life work of Lajos Kelemen by his correspondence, it will be a basic key for the monography of the 20th century’s transilvanian cultural history.
